AMD wins graphic preformace wise, even though this will mostly come down to your video card, I think a nvidia 6800 series or high is good.

Intel will win multimedia wise. They “perform” faster, as the tests you see are benchmarks they show higher performace gains BUT that is just numbers. There is a difference between benchmarks and real world performace.

With the laptop market they are pretty much even. Odds are I would suggest a intel CPU with a nvidia Geforce 6800 series or higher if you can get it.

Generally speaking, a core 2 duo is better than AMD when comparing 2 equally fast processors. For example, a 2.0 GHZ Core 2 Duo is faster than an 2.0GHZ AMD turion dual core one. Any core 2 duo/AMD will be good enough for at least 3-4 years, but i suggest for graphic design/multimedia a 2.0GHZ core 2 duo would be good enough.

Also, you might wanna consider purchasing a laptop with a discrete graphic card (something like 8400M GS). Unless you are using MAYA for your graphic design, a integrated graphic card ( for example, Intel X3100) will do the job.
