What does the number refer to in Intel and AMD Processor names?

Waldo asked:

Like the 4800 in the AMD X2 Dual-Core 4800 or the 4500 in the Intel Core 2 Duo E4500? I know bigger number means faster, but is that number calculated from anything? Like processor speed + FSB speed or anything like that?

On those type of AMD model numbers, the number does generally mean faster. The general idea is that if you were to look at old Pentium 4 Speeds, the AMD processor would perform as fast as a Pentium 4 at that speed. So the AMD 4800 would perform just like a P4 @ 4.8Ghz. However with Intel processors, the number is just a model number. Generally the higher the number in a series, the better, but the first letter and number denote CPU construction. The same goes for AMD processors like the TL-60. You actually have to look up the specs.
