Upgrading motherboard and processor but not hard drive?

Ancal asked:

Hello. I am planning to upgrade my motherboard and processor from amd 3100 sempron to amd X2. I plan to keep my hard drive. Will my windows XP pro work without having to re-install the Operating system?

Yeah. Shouldn’t be any problems at all.

It depends on where the OS is stored. More recently, the OS has been stored on the HD, but it used to be on the motherboard. Try it out, and if you just get DOS, then you have to go and buy Windows.

  • Benjamin H:

Most likely it will work, however Windows will detect the hardware change (The serial number of the MOBO) and require you to re-activate.

Your hard drive will usually not work with a new motherboard, as the new motherboard may have other devices not recognized by the current operating system (lan drivers, sound, and controllers)
If you have an XP cd you can boot into the CD, goto install windows and run a repair option. This should install the correct drivers for basic operation.

  • The_program_freak:

Yes…no problem at all….but sometimes, some of the electronic parts of the motherboard may not be recognized by the current installation of windows xp you have, then you;ll have to reinstall xp…no choice….

You shouldn’t have any issues, making sure wether it is IDE or SATA will be up to you to find out. As far as running windows you should be ok. You may run across some driver issues, you can always find out by right click on my computer- click on manage – and then hardware – If you see anything with an explamation point or question mark you will need to install those drivers. Also make sure to get the right chipset driver loaded to really make sure all is fine.

No problemo… No problem at all…:)

Craazy is closest, propbably spot on!

New mother board & new processor. The Windoze on your harddrive is looking for 32 bit instructions, and xyz hardware, your new chip is churning out compatible instructions (?) but the abc hardware will probably be a real head ache.

I used to do windoze support in another life. A kid called in and wanted to know why his computer wouldn’t run – he had put in a new motherboard and his windoze-equipped harddrive – he hadn’t bothered with any of the new drivers for the new motherboard hardware.

My guess – it isn’t going to work. If you are unlucky, it would work but only marginally, and not enough that you would need to do a reinstall – so you would start out with sub-standard performance.

What is the point of a new processor and motherboard, if you are not going to try and optimize the OS? You can probably skimp on memory too, since everything else would be hobbled. ;^)

Try it! I would love to know how it comes out, especially looking at the various other comments as posted.

No, certainly not,, you will have to reinstall your windows, because the bootlog present in your harddisk will not be recognized,, secondly,,, amd 3100 sempron is a 32-bit processor and X2 is a 64-bit processor,,, so to be on the safe sideee,, my advice,, is u should backup anything u want to,,,,,cheers.

Hey bro, the truth is that you will have to reinstall your OS.This is because when running installation, your operating system configures itself from your motherboard and processor. So changing any of them will have to alter the functioning of the OS.So you will have to reinstall after buying these.Thanks.

Theres a 99% chance that it wont. Even if it starts to boot when it gets to the windows desktop its going to start the found new hardware wizard for like 25 pieces of hardware. You will need a xp disk to get the drivers from. I dont know much about amd, im a intel man. See if you can find a x2 that fits the socket on your exsisting motherboard. I know this from experience, I dont know where the other contributors got their info

  • atxaskew:

Yes, It is possible, but you may find a reduce in your systems performance. Windows reccomends reinstalling windows again if the motherboard has been replaced with a different mobo from the os previously installed on, remember to back up your data. hope it helps.

  • little_leo45:

I would pop the Windows XP Disk in after I installed the new motherbooard in and do a repair. It would be best to do a fresh install to get the best performance out of your system. But if you in a hurry do a repair. You’ll still have issues every so often, but you won’t have to completely reload everything.

  • InthenetSC:

    Crazeey and LD are correct.

Because you are changing both the CPU and the mobo, your previously installed version of Windows will most likely fail. The HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) would need to be rebuilt to work with your new hardware. You MIGHT be able to solve this by sysprepping the the HDD before adding it to the new rig, however the task could be daunting if you have never used sysprep before. See the link below

yup the OS should be on ur HD

  • schagenbr:

To be quite honest I don’t think it will. Diff processor diff motherboard diff chip set, nah don’t think so.
