what is the difference between an AMD processor and a Intel processor?

With the introduction of the 64 bit AMD processors, is there anything that Intel came out with that is 64 bit, and if I am looking at buying a computer, which is better for the money: an AMD 64 bit processor, or a Intel (I am looking at purchasing this computer, so that I won’t have to upgrade for vista…) Also if the 64 bit is better, then where can I find the windows XP 64 bit OS, and does it make that big of a difference???
