Is there any special setup to install a Dual Core AMD Processor?

krimla2000 asked:

Ok, I just purchased a model 185 AMD dual core processor. My motherboard’s bios supports dual core so that’s not a problem. Now, after I install my processor, do I need to activate a special bios setting and after boot up and do I need to install any special windows XP feature to get it to recognize both cores? Is this all an automatic “plug n play” operation that does all this itself (like single core processors)? Thanks for any help.

You just need to put it in the motherboard.
Always remember that your motherboard must support the processor you are going to put in it else both the motherboard and processor are of new use.

Should be automatic, if not you’ll need to read the MB manual. I doubt you’ll have to do anything in the settings.

It should be plug n’ play. If for some reason is doesn’t show up correctly, in device manager you’ll want to uninstall the device under the “Computer” category and then reboot. Also note that AMD has a very useful dual-core optimizer tool on their website. I would recommend installing that to get the most out of the processor. It may even fix problems with some games or apps.

No there is nothing that you’ll need to do in order for it to be recognized as a dual core processor. However, a 185 dual core AMD would be an Opteron Processor. Most Opteron processors need a certain board and need to work with Registerred memory. Hopefully your motherboard and RAM support this processor if they do then you are good to go. If they don’t then you need to return the processor and get an Athlon X2 processor for a dualcore. Beware that you cannot return a processor for a refund after it is opened unless it is bad, so read your motherboards manual. Good Luck HTH.
